What No One Ever Tells You About Adult Acne

If you are over the age of 18 and wondering why you are still dealing with breakouts, you are not alone.

Acne is not just a teenage skin problem, and for many Australians it can be a painful skin condition they have to deal with right through until their 40s and even 50s.

Despite what your parents may have told you, acne is not caused by eating too much chocolate!

This common skin condition that is caused when a hair follicle becomes blocked, and then it’s associated oil gland gets inflamed.

There are many types of types of acne:

  • blind pimples, or papules, that form under the skin
  • pustules, those sore infected pimples on the surface of the skin
  • blackheads
  • whiteheads

And of course, breakouts of acne can form anywhere on the body where sebaceous glands (or oil glands) exist – which means our face, neck, back, shoulders and chest area.

The real pain of adult acne

As well as being physically uncomfortable, dealing with adult acne is frustrating and stressful. It can also cause a blow to self-confidence.

As well as living with the pain of inflamed breakouts and facial scarring, many acne sufferers struggle with feelings of poor self-esteem and low self-confidence. A recent US study has highlighted the debilitating emotional impact that acne has on adults’ wellbeing, likening adult acne to chronic illnesses like asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, and arthritis.

The study reviewed the effects of adult acne on 11 unmarried females, aged 18 to 25. While these participants did openly resented the physical discomforts of their skin condition, more upsetting was the emotional damage they reported as a result of their adult acne.

The study found that the biggest problems with adult acne were not just the pain from the papules, cysts and skin inflammation, but actually many adult acne sufferers felt that because their acne was visible to others, it affected their personal confidence and self-esteem.

This medical study concluded that an inflamed and scarred complexion led to a much lower self-esteem and caused most acne sufferers to simply withdraw from social activities and avoid going out in public.

Adult acne comes with emotional baggage.

Often the real impact of adult acne is overlooked. Yes, everyone can see it. But the pain of acne more than that. Those adults who suffer from skin concerns such as cystic acne, blackheads and whiteheads, the true impact is much more than others see.

At Skin Project Cosmetics Clinics by Doctors, like many professionals , we recognise that skin disorders often lead to emotional distress. We understand that adult acne is a serious skin condition that affects a person’s emotions and quality of life.

Apart from the physical discomfort of redness and pain of acne, adult acne can quite simply make you feel physically unattractive. Not liking what you in the mirror means facing a daily battle lack of confidence, anger, frustration, shame, depression and anxiety. All of which lead to social anxiety and withdrawal, and staying at home rather than going with friends and generally avoiding life.
